In-Person Classes
Keyboarding and 10 Key
Proper keyboarding techniques including seating, posture, finger placement, and reaches will be reviewed. Students will be allowed some individualized practice time to brush up on their keyboarding or 10 key skills using Mavis Beacon or an online program.
Computer Boot Camp
Computer terminology will be introduced as well as how to use a mouse, start and close a program, move and resize windows, use menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, scroll bars, and get help. (For students with little or no computer experience.)
Basic Computers
Proper keyboarding techniques will be reviewed and time allowed for individual brush up on skills. Basic Computer terminology and use will be reviewed. File management, including the organization of folders and files, will be covered in depth. Students will also learn internet skills, security, and proper etiquette using the latest browsers and search engines.
E-Mail/Outlook
Students will communicate with Microsoft Outlook e-mail using proper e-mail etiquette. Managing mail information in folders and organizing contacts, calendars, notes and tasks are explored.
Basic Word
Students will utilize Microsoft Word to create, save, and store a wide range of documents. Topics covered include: (1) creating and saving a document; (2) editing documents; (3) formatting text and paragraphs; and (4) formatting entire documents with columns, headers and footers, footnotes, citations, and bibliographies.
Intermediate Word
Students will explore some of the more advanced features of Word including: (1) creating and formatting tables; (2) illustrating documents with graphics; (3) working with themes and building blocks; and (4) merging word documents such as mailings and labels.
Basic Excel
Students will utilize Microsoft Excel to perform numeric calculations and to analyze and present numeric data. A variety of spreadsheet topics will be covered including: (1) navigating a worksheet, cell entries, and named ranges (2) working with formulas and functions including relative and absolute referencing; (3) formatting a worksheet; and (4) working with charts.
Intermediate Excel
Students will explore some of the more advanced features of Excel including: (1) analysis of data using formulas; (2) managing workbook data by grouping, protecting and creating custom views; (3) managing data using tables; and (4) analyzing table data by creating subtotals, validation, and filtering and extracting table data.
Powerpoint
Students will utilize Microsoft PowerPoint to create visually dynamic presentations with slides that may be displayed as a slide show on a computer, a video projector, or over the internet. Speaker notes for the presenter and handouts for the audience are included.
Job Applications
Students will fill in an online application. What might employers look for in the application to help in narrowing the pool of applicants? Knowing this may move you one step closer to getting the call for the interview. Tips for putting your most positive side forward will be discussed.
Resume
Students will create their own personal resume tailored to a particular job they would like to apply for. Business protocol and tips for creating a professional document will be given. Completing a resume template as well as uploading a resume for an online application is addressed.
Cover Letters
Students will create a cover letter to accompany their resume in the job application process. Business protocol and tips for creating a professional, dynamic letter will be given.
Interview Preparation
Being totally PREPARED is the key to a successful interview that can land you the job. How do you prepare for an interview? Tips such as dress, hygiene, arriving early, anticipating questions and preparing answers, knowledge of the company and other topics will be discussed.
Mock Interview
Students will go through a mock interview with a panel of three interviewers from the community who have done/are currently doing the hiring for their business. These professionals will evaluate, score, and give students constructive feedback.
Workplace Etiquette
Workplace topics and job expectations will be discussed including: proper dress, telephone and e-mail etiquette, time management, computer use, employer/employee, and customer/employee relations.
Creating a Professional Letter
Students will write and format a professional letter on the topic of their choice. Proper letter parts and wording, placement, punctuation, grammar, and spelling will be highlighted.
Using Tables to Create Documents
Students will learn how to use tables created in Microsoft Word to structure the layout of professional documents such as calendars, resumes, itineraries, and schedules. They will use the table to serve as the underlying grid, then split and merge cells, adjust the size of the table columns and rows, and remove and change borders as necessary to get a nicely formatted, easy to read document.
Customer Service
EVERYONE is involved in customer service—either directly or indirectly! Exceptional customer service is what keeps people coming back and recommending you to others. How do you give exceptional customer service? Learn some tips about creating this attitude in yourself, your business, and your co-workers.
Google Drive/Cloud Computing
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms are productivity apps that let you create different kinds of online documents, work on them in real time with other people, and store them in your Google Drive online – all for free. You can access the documents you create from any computer, anywhere in the world. This class will give students a quick overview of how to use these online apps and organize their Google Drive.
Mail Merge/Labels
A mail merge combines a standard document, such as a form letter, with customized data, such as a set of names and addresses, to create a set of personalized documents. Students will generate several mail merges during this workshop that will produce form letters, business cards, mailing labels, and a directory.
Financial Literacy (Budgeting, Credit and Debt, Consumer Protection
This training will provide the core knowledge needed for making good basic financial decisions. Topics include goal setting, budgeting, how credit works, the various types of credit, debt and debt management, loans, consumer protection laws, ID theft, and insurance basics. Students will create a financial vision and learn the tools and steps needed to achieve it.
MCIS/PEP Talk
The Montana Career Information System (MCIS) is the web-based tool used for career planning. PEP Talk (Personalized Employment Plan) was designed to help people with limited time find a career that meets their personal and financial needs. During this workshop, students will develop a Personal Employment Plan using PEP Talk and then set up a portfolio online to manage their career plans using MCIS.
Bring Your “A” Game
“Bring Your A Game” is a national training program designed to instill the 7 foundational workplace behaviors and values in today’s workforce. After completing the program, participants will understand the long-term benefits of work ethic and setting a solid foundation for personal and professional success.
Online Meeting Apps
Several different team collaboration apps will be explored. (Teams, Discord, Skype, Zoom) Each platform has similar features to help groups of employees communicate and collaborate with one another and outside guests. Some of those features covered will be messaging chat, calling, video meetings, screen and file sharing, and tasks and polling.
Adobe Acrobat Pro (PDF's)
This desktop version of Acrobat simplifies working with and editing any PDF. The class explores a variety of PDF tools including: 1) creating and editing text and images; 2) annotating PDF’s using comments, stamps, and other mark ups; 3) compressing and comparing files; 4) merging and splitting files into PDF’s; 5) extracting and rotating pages: 6) filling and e-signing PDF’s; and 7) preparing a fillable form from scratch or converting from another software.
